One great advantage of this is that you will be the only one using resources from this server. Unfortunately, this hosting requires a hefty monthly fee. A shared server is much cheaper than a dedicated one, often only costing a few dollars a month, but as the name itself implies, you share the space and resource with many other users and their websites.
A virtual private server is like the middle road between the two. Because of the way the server is partitioned in this type of web hosting, you will basically have a whole partition to yourself. This then has the added advantage of not only being cheaper, but also other clients of the web host will not be able to use the resources that have been allocated for your use.
Virtual private servers also allow you to make sandboxes and honeypots. These basically allow you to test various features and updates while keeping the main area of your site secure. One partition can therefore be used as a type of backup, while the other will house your site and its important files. Any new software that is released will therefore be able to be tested in the so-called sandbox, and once verified be moved over to the main site in question. You could trap any security issues in the second partition. It may appear like the normal site, but all important files will be missing from it.
